This last project was a live brief set by Diane Harrison, a textile company who primarily design textiles for interiors such as bedding, but also apparel. We were given five themes, of which I chose Urban. I have ALWAYS avoided any association with Urban because I prefer to work so much more fluidly. To my utter surprise, I actually won the weeks placement at the Diane Harrison studio in Manchester.  Although at first glance, you may not see Urban in my designs, it came from many design ideas where I based it on the reflections you see of cities in puddles and the strange shapes you get in city building windows. FAKE Magazine Issue 004

I can finally show you my illustrations which were commissioned by FAKE magazine (www.thatfakemagazine.com)!
This has been exciting for me as it is my first professional commission, it’s so encouraging to be approached to be featured in a magazine! If you haven’t come across FAKE already, make sure you check it out as it features many talented designers/photographers/writers & is a lovely little read.

Supporting Study: Illustrator
So for three weeks I have taken on a supporting study specialising in the CAD programme Illustrator. It has completely fried my brain but eventually I have got the hang of it! I wanted to explore the possibilities of laser cutting so I used Illustrator to draw silhouettes of jewelry. My aim was to design lamp shades which create interesting shadows on walls and ceilings. This is a prototype of one of my design ideas, and I absolutely love it! I banged my head against a few walls during the process of designing these lamp shades though!

As promised, here are two visuals of some murals I’ve been designing for my current University project! Trompe L’oeil combined with Photography. As I’ve mentioned in a previous post, the ‘objects’ in these murals, such as the Harp with the flag and the Stag antlers, are both painted to scale, the Harp is bigger than myself when stood next to it! It’s hard to get a sense of how big these paintings are when you only see them on this small scale.
I think it’s got an interesting twist on the traditional idea of murals. Deadline on Monday, and I am completely finished a few days ahead for once, hooray!

Deceive the Eye
Here is a taster for whats to come.. the deadline for this current project is the 16th January.. So you’ll just have to hold on until then for the rest!Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

Most of these have already been on my blog before but as I have been adding more to my blog, some of my favourite designs are getting lost on the older pages so I wanted to make a little capsule of them for the new followers to see!
I love my florals, can you tell?!

Finished!!

I have surprised myself.. My attempt at painting a large antique chair from Chatsworth House, Trompe L’oeil style, has kinda worked! I painted it using Gouache and Acrylic paints.. It took me four broken up days (so 2 days really) to complete.
Yes, it is life size. I have a photo on my phone of my class mate pretending to sit in it! I got it professionally photographed so that I could have a copy of it at high resolution so that I can digitally reproduce it life size again.
In the two other photos above I have digitally placed it in the Holden Gallery at the Manchester School of Art (MMU).
I’m so pleased this project seems to be going according to plan.. I have one week left, plus the Christmas holidays, and then one week when we’re back to complete this.. Hopefully I’ll have some good mural ideas to show you soon!

Level 5 Group Review & more work up for the MMU open day

Here are some images of my work from the review and MMU open day. I always enjoy the group reviews as it allows me to see the other work of students on my course who are doing weave & knit (and therefore rarely get to see!) ..I can’t help but love and share the work of some girls in my year!

Clair Whyman http://clairwhyman.tumblr.com/
Clair is specialising in Weave and is currently studying stained glass windows and the way light shines through it.

Melissa Baggaley http://melissabaggaley.tumblr.com
Melissa is also a weaver, however she is combining this with print! Her current project is looking at Scaffolding and construction, an unusual topic to pick and I love how she is transforming this into something so interesting!

Totally abandoned my blog recently.. I’ve been working hard though! Here is a little taster for whats to come….

Ciao for now!

Today has been a VERY unproductive day. I sat in the university studio 9am-4pm and frustratingly didn’t produce anything I can say I am proud of! Everyone has these days from time to time but it temporarily disheartened me.  However! Tomorrow (Wednesday) I am visiting one of my favorite places; Chatsworth House in Derbyshire! I will be photographing some of the rooms and furniture to spur me on & give me something to work from. Yippeeeeeeeee! View high resolution

Trompe L’oeil

For my 2nd project of this year, I am basing it on the technique of Trompe L’oeil. Above are two practices in pencil, to get a feel for it and see if I really can achieve such a realistic style. So far, so good.. Not perfect, but I will try my damn hardest to pull this one off! I will keep you updated of my progress, keep your fingers & toes crossed for me (I’m quite nervous about this project, it could go very, very wrong!)

P.S. Apologies for the shocking photos, blame the crackberry!
